Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith (Centralverein - CV)
Founded in 1893 to combat anti-Semitism and defend Jews' rights as German citizens. The CV, initially criticised by older conservative Jewish-German organisations for calling too much attention to politically prominent Jews, quickly became German Jewry's largest political organisation and during Weimar represented more than half the Jews. The attitude of CV leaders was typified by a combination of liberalism, German patriotism, and a desire to maintain Jewish pride. In the first few years of the Nazi regime, the CV remained active and took part in the main activities of the Central Representation until the Nazis dissolved it late in 1938.
